We'll Be The Judge of That! - American Idol 5, May 9PageView Printable version of this article David: To steal a line from Simon, that sounded cabaret. It just didn’t sound like Katharine singing – rather it reminded me of a high school play. Just not good. And what about that outfit? Horrible! It made Katharine look like she was about 30 pounds heavier than she actually is. As soon as we heard that Katharine would be singing “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” I figured it would be a smash. And I was right! After that performance, America won’t be able to help falling in love with her (if they haven’t already by now). It won’t be enough to keep her out of the bottom two, but it was still a great performance. Bruce: She got a bit breathless in the middle and it caused her to make a minor lyrical flub, but no straight male in America is going to care. She looked stunning and her face was full of fun and life. Katharine is a real double-threat because when her vocal skills falter her beauty and smile take over and kick things up to new heights. I can’t wait to see what she does with the anchor song! 9 In the immortal words of Bill the Cat – “ACK!” When Katharine screws up, she does it royally! She was an equal opportunity destroyer with this song – flat and sharp in equal amounts. Her rehearsal at Graceland sounded better than the actual performance. By far it was the worst anchor singing of the season. She threw more runs thrown into this song than a family of cats at the Leggs Pantyhose factory. 4 Final Thoughts: Sandy: First of all, I want to give a big shout out to my friend Claire and her devoted group of Idol fans who meet every Tuesday at 7 PM for dinner and then watch the show together. Fans like you are why our site exists! Elvis week worked well overall. It was great for the guys, not so much for Katharine, especially on her second song. I think she’s going home. Who will join her in the bottom two? I’m just not sure. I’m going to guess Elliott, even though I don’t think he belongs there, because he hasn’t seemed to have a solid fan base so far in the competition. So, Katharine, Exit, Stage Right. I’ll see the rest of you next week. Ciao! Jenn: Look, I have a really bad track record with predicting who goes home. I think I’ve been right twice, and that was on nights when it was pretty clear who was at the bottom of the barrel. Basically, it doesn’t matter what I say. So I’ll just say that I want Taylor and Chris to go, so I’ll pretend they’ll be the bottom two. And since Idol recapper Betsy has a theory that Taylor will be fourth (or at least she had the theory - she may have dropped it), I’ll say he’s out tonight. Now sit back and watch me be wrong. (As long as it’s not Elliot, I don’t really care. I love you, Elliot! Call me!) Tyler: At this stage in the game, anything can happen. Elliott, easily the ugly duckling of the Final Four, pulled off two ganders of performances that hopefully aren't his swan songs. Taylor the Silver Fox has a huge den of followers and a cunning talent, and will most likely survive another week. Bald eagle Chris tried to sink his talons into two Elvis classics, but didn't quite soar to new heights. As much as I want her in my lap, Kat's first performance was like coughing up a hairball, and her second sounded like she got spayed. I really can't predict who Ryan SeaUrchin will call out tomorrow, but based on tonight, Chris and Kat should be visiting the kennel, with Ms. McPhee's Idol run being put to sleep (man, these animal metaphors can get depressing). David: I think Taylor did the best out of the four, picking two good songs and performing them well. Chris was second-best, then Katharine, and finally Elliott. I’m sure there is plenty of disagreement about that choice, but hey, it’s not my fault if everybody else is wrong. Anyway, Elliott and Katharine will be the bottom two, and I believe Elliott will be leaving. However, it wouldn’t surprise me a whole lot if Katharine goes instead. Bruce: In my opinion this is the best Final Four we have ever seen. I am literally going to hate to see any one of them go and as far as I’m concerned they can declare a 4-way tie and give us the pleasure of having all four debut albums come out in the same week. But we all know that isn’t going to happen. By now each of our finalists has fan clubs with memberships larger than some nations. The voting is going to be massive, and brutal. Somehow I have to pick a Bottom Two and it’s not going to be easy. Instead of taking the popularity factor into consideration I’ll just look at the performances. Based solely on what they did with some of Elvis’ classic recordings I’m going to place Elliott and Katharine at center stage. Because of her unusually weak effort in the anchor slot – along with her slaughter of “Against All Odds” during Love Song Week, I think a tearful America will say goodbye to the last female finalist. I also think it’s a safe bet that first and last place will be very few votes apart from one another. Conclusions: Consensus gives us a bottom two of Katharine and Elliot, with Katharine headed down to the end of Lonely Street to Heartbreak Hotel. Who will it be?
