We'll Be The Judge of That! - Rock Star: INXS, August 30by Foxes on Idol Judging Staff -- 08/31/2005
View Printable version of this article By now, you’ve read the recap on RealityNewsOnline, so you know what Dave Navarro, INXS, and David Bloomberg think. But what do our judges – Sting 7 and Paris Cosby - have to say? Ty Taylor, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” Sting7: I’ve been crowing about Ty’s soulful chops all season, and I think INXS was appalled by the fact that he was in the bottom three last week. Another nailed performance this week, but whoever is doing the sound for this week’s show should be fired. We could barely hear the vaunted gospel choir, and when we did, it was sharp! Ty got ripped off by the sound engineers, but it was good to know that INXS recognized what a spectacular talent he is.
Paris: I liked toned down Ty. It’s also nice to see him (as well as some of the others) finally speaking up and saying they want to be a part of INXS. Anyway, I think Ty is a born entertainer and I liked what he did this week. Maybe not as much as I’ve liked his other stuff but it was good, I really liked it. J.D. Fortune, “Suspicious Minds” Sting7: J.D. was an Elvis impersonator? I expected to be more shocked. This week, his Elvis crossed the lined into cheesy. Didn’t like it at all, too many tricks, not enough “soul.” His performance in the studio should be the first knoll of death, his self-absorbed explanation of why he chose this song should be the second.
Paris: My, my, my. Elvis, is it? First Canadian Idol and now J.D. I’ve had enough Elvis. Anyway, I liked half the song. There were some really entertaining and fun parts and then some really goofy parts. I found it entertaining but I didn’t love it. Marty Casey, “Wish You Were Here” Sting7: I’m really torn by this! Yes, Marty sang it passionately, and beautifully and he was clearly full of emotion and cast a magic spell over the audience. But. Somehow, him singing line for line, phrasing for phrasing, as the original somehow made me feel like I was watching one of the zillions of Pink Floyd cover bands in the world! I was moved, and I wasn’t, all at the same time. And, what was with the Constantine-treatment from the cameras? It’s funny to hear Dave praise Marty’s singing when “Wish You Were Here” is not really vocally challenging at all. Dave is losing me slowly. What. Is. He. Talking. About?! Paris: Marty has been so on and off for me that it’s hard for me to really put myself behind him and cheer him on. This week, though, he was amazing! I loved it! It was an awesome job. He’ll probably completely freak me out next week and I really wish he wouldn’t do that. Jordis Unga, “Imagine” Sting7: There is not one contestant left on Rock Star: INXS that could have handled the sensitivity and hope required to really deliver “Imagine” other than Jordis. Yeah, she had a serious misstep last week, which made this riveting performance even more special. She’s tough too! The simple purity of her voice and the camera’s dead-on shot of those big expressive brown eyes of hers was just television gold! I feel honored I got to hear it. Paris: I find this type of singing to be completely in Jordis’ comfort zone so I don’t think she took a risk at all. I thought she did a good job even if I did drift off for a bit during her performance. I will say, though, that I used to be a fan of hers and lately not so much. I don’t think she’s as talented as the others. I think she’s gotten through on good song choices because when she’s tested, she doesn’t do so well. Good job this week though. Mig Ayesa, “Live and Let Die” Sting7: Last week, it was “Do Or Die”, this week it’s “Live and Let Die”! I’m starting to worry for Mig! In a week of special performances, this one kind of felt flat to me. That last note, while long, was sharp throughout! I don’t know, this week the game has been stepped up considerably, and somehow Mig was below that bar for me! Paris: The thing I noticed about Mig is that his voice is naturally higher and I don’t know why I didn’t notice that before. I like Mig though. I like him a lot. I just didn’t like what he did this week. There was a lot of screaming involved and I just don’t think it was even close to his best effort. I loved the energy but not much else. Suzie McNiel, “Bohemian Rhapsody” Sting7: That was enormous! Just huge, I mean, you don’t see a gospel choir rocking out everyday, do ya? There was House Band, there was a string section, there was Queen… and Suzie. I’m annoyed that she cheated out of the big notes, and overall, she was not the center of it all, as she should have been. She was outdone by all of the ballast around her, and for me, that is a problem. Paris: A few weeks ago I would have been certain Suzie was toast in this competition. Now, I’m not so sure! After last week and now this week, I see her as a serious threat! She did an amazing job with the song. I absolutely loved it! Final Thoughts: Sting7: Bottom three, I think, will be J.D., Suzie, and Mig. J.D. because his Elvis, in the grand scheme of this week, came off plastic as Frisbee. Suzie because I think she was swallowed in the whole huge spectacle she was supposed to master. Mig because of that horrendous sour note at the end, and that vocally, he wasn’t hitting the emotion chords that Marty, Jordis and Ty did. I’m as unsure about this bottom three as any prediction I have ever made! It’s getting to be time to take risks, some will work, some won’t. I have no idea who’s going to win this gig! I think Suzie will get the encore, because it was such a spectacle, but that doesn’t mean it was good performance from her! And, you know, I think J.D. just may be going home this week! I honestly think so! Paris: You’d think it would get easier as the weeks went on to predict this but it doesn’t. After this week, though, I think things are even more confusing. The three that I easily would have put into the Bottom 3 a week or two ago are now the ones I would clearly put in the top. The three I think should go in the Bottom 3 are J.D., Mig and Jordis. The three I actually think will be in the Bottom 3 are Ty, J.D. and well, I’ll be honest and say that I have no idea for the third. I don’t think it’s going to be Marty. I’d be surprised if it was Mig – even though I think it should be. I’d like it to be Jordis. As for who will be going home, I think it’s going to be Ty. And, I just want to say… Please, J.D., no more Elvis! Please! Conclusions:Split decision from the judges this week – they see J.D., Mig, and Ty or Suzie in the bottom three, with either J.D. or Ty going home. Both judges agree that this week is almost impossible to predict. Who is going home?
