We'll Be The Judge of That! - Rock Star: INXS, July 19

by Foxes on Idol Judging Staff -- 07/20/2005
Jordis (right) impressed a lot of people last week. Will she keep it up? Will someone blow the band and our judges away? And who should be sent packing? The answers are a click away!

By now, you’ve read the recap on RealityNewsOnline, so you know what Dave Navarro, INXS, and David Bloomberg think. But what do our judges – Jen Shrader, Paris Cosby, and Sting7 - have to say?

Marty Casey, “What I Like About You”

Jen: Marty is quickly becoming one of my favorite men; he definitely acknowledged the crowd and the band, one of a few contestants who are definitely taking notes as to what INXS says they want. I'd be jumping up and down if I were watching this performance live and I love how he ended on the "Hey," instead of the line.

Paris: Okay, Marty reminds me of a peacock. He’s a bit of a spaz as well. I like his singing but I don’t like the stage presence he has going on. He’s on and off for me. This week it was off – a big no.

Sting7: He sure is energetic, isn’t he? I just didn’t get him. I just sat thinking, I’ve seen all of this before. Jumping off the drum kit, spaz dancing… he even sounded disturbingly like Mick Jagger. I just wasn’t impressed. I’ll forget I even saw him five minutes from now.

Daphna Dove, “I Hate Myself for Loving You”

Jen: And this is one of my favorite women; another one to work with the band, this was definitely a solid performance.

Paris: Her prancing is quickly becoming one of my largest pet peeves and no matter how much I try, I just don’t like her. I just don’t find her singing to be all that great. Okay, yes. INXS? No.

Sting7: So, last week, lovely Daphna went for mysterious and ookie, this week she just went all out feral and rocking. She took the INXS’ advice and showed her pretty face, and was no less entrancing. Something about her, you can’t stop looking at her. She’s amazing! Unless she makes a horrific mistake, she’s going to be here a while!

Ty Taylor, “Somebody Told Me”

Jen: This guy is a pro. He worked on the women in the front row, but in a good way, not like Wil did last week. I understand INXS wants to make clear their new singer is fronting a band and they don't want so much choreographed performance. But if they don't pick Ty they should at least hire him to be the opening act!

Paris: I love his voice but he still screams theatrical to me. It’s that or drama queen. He has a great voice though. I’m just not sold yet.

Sting7: He’s like a big old rock god up there! Many things to be impressed by – most important being how he managed to emphasize the melody in that Killers track that is easy to lose. He may be the most vocally gifted of the men rockers, and presence… oh yeah, he has presence. One of the few contestants I could actually see fronting INXS right here, right now.

Suzie McNiel, “Roxanne”

Jen: It definitely was different hearing a female version of this song. I'm still not sure if she's right for the band. She's good, but not memorable.

Paris: I don’t think this was the best song choice for Suzie. She kicked it up in the middle and made me like it but really it was only the fast parts that worked for me. I think she’ll be okay this week though. If she doesn’t squeak through on the voting, INXS won’t send her home.

Sting7: Well well well! Looks like Suzie won’t have to sell her body to the night either! That was dang impressive! The Police are one of my all-time eternal favorite bands and people messing with their arrangements will usual annoy me to know end. Suzie got saucy and hot with it, and I was completely sold. If it were a record, I would buy it. Funny how the women don’t gender flip lyrics either (it does cock an eyebrow when Suzie sings “I won’t share you with another boy”) – it would be allowed, but I think they respect the songs enough to sing them exactly as is. Good for them!

Mig Ayesa, “Walk this Way”

Jen: I was on pins and needles for this one, mostly waiting to see if he messed up the words. He didn't and I loved the ending!

Paris: I was a little scared for him with those lyrics but he pulled it off. The thing about Mig is that he seems so worn out at the end of the song that I’m not sure how he’d pull off an entire concert. His voice didn’t seem too strong tonight either. Maybe it was the song, I don’t know. I’m still putting him at the front of the pack as far as who actually has a shot at winning.

Sting7: Mig did indeed conquer “Walk This Way,” a song with so many lyrics, that precious few actually know all of them. I’m not one of those people, either. Gotta salute that! That said, you could see Mig was really concentrating on getting those lyrics right, and that’s fine, but it affected the rest of the performance! He sort of stood there and ditty-popped while he enunciated every syllable. That’s correct, but that ain’t rock! Hopefully, next week he’ll give himself a break and sing a song with, like, seven words in it, like “Sweet Dreams Are Made of This”!
